She received her Bachelor of Music in Performance, with honors, from the New
England Conservatory of Music, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her primary flute instructors included: Jean Harling, Paula Robison, James Pappoutsakis, Toshiko Kohno, and Britton Johnson.
Ms. Gillespie was a Flutist in the United States Marine Band, "The President's Own." During her 30-year tenure there, 1979 – 2009, she served 26 years as Principal Flute and was often featured as a soloist with both the band and the Marine’s White House chamber orchestra. While in the band, she performed numerous State functions at the White House and State Department for many of our nation's presidents.
She retired from the Marines in 2009, and shortly thereafter moved to Portland,
OR. Since “retiring” to Portland, Ms. Gillespie has been an active free-lance musician, subbing with the:
Oregon Symphony;
Newport (OR) Symphony Orchestra;
Portland Opera Orchestra;
Oregon Ballet Theatre; and
Other groups in the area, such as Duo con Brio.
She also:
Is a member of the Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra;
Has made recordings with various artists available on YouTube;
Teaches:
Private flute lessons, as well as
At a studio in NE Portland
Plus:
Taught at Concordia University-Portland until they closed the end of Spring semester, after their April 25, 2020 video commencement ceremony, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
