Historical Technical Notes about Early Recordings

In the early 1990's when the Solo Collection project was recorded at Bias Recording Studio in Studio B, the digital revolution in recording was in its infancy, and not widely commerically available. Multi-track analogue tape with commercial noise reduction was still widely being used. That technical analogue recording medium was used for recording:

• All the individual nostalgic love songs;
• Solo Collection;
• The still unreleased Romantic Duets; and
• With a deviation for recording Phase I of the Hymns and Songs of My Mother album.

Namely:

• 2 inch analog master tape;
• 24 track;
• Recorded at 30 inches per second.
• At the time Solo Collection were recorded, Bias was still using Dolby A noise reduction on master tapes in Studio B. They subsequently upgraded to using Dolby SR noise reduction, which was used for recording Phase I of Hymns and Songs of My Mother. Dolby SR is still being used for recordings being made using analogue rather than digital.

The processes for bringing those original 1990's analog recordings up to the quality demanded by TortoiseClimbing Audio™ for our public releases includes the following steps:

• They were decoded from the Dolby A noise reduction;
• They were converted to digital at an audiophile level of detail;
• They digitally post production processed by TortoiseClimbing Audio™;
• (Augmentation of accompaniments on some songs with additional instruments is being explored;)
• Digital Remixing; and
• Digital Re-mastering.

Critical contribution of Ms Nancy Reid

When we first started, Terry arranged for the studio to bring in someone to build the accompaniment parts for "I Am the Starlight." Then we used karaoke tracks for several Everly Brothers numbers. Things really changed when we were introducted to Nancy Reid, who then played on a couple other early recordings, and then for me in creating the 1993 Solo Collection album. It was both a privilege to work with the fantastic piano accompanist she is on the majority of the numbers on the playlist for the Solo Collection private album, plus she enabled actually creating it. It was privately released as a limited number of Cassettes to friends and family in 1993. For details about Ms. Nancy Reid see Nancy Reid.

Playlist

Following is the playlist of nostalgic love songs on that album. They are from shortly before, during WWII, shortly thereafter, plus several ballads from the 1970's, and two spanish influenced songs. It is almost entirely solo vocal, and dominantly piano accompaniment. There are a few exceptions where Karaoke track accompaniments were used.
